risotto...

Some people say that even bad pizza is good pizza. The idea that you can't really go wrong with pizza even when it may be mediocre has never been one that I really bought into. I understand where they're going with that concept, but I'm sorry...bad pizza is bad pizza. You may be able to wash it down with a good beer or wine, but you know it's not great especially when you can remember having great.

Bad risotto I can't wash down with anything. I love risotto but for some reason I don't think of it often enough when I'm cooking or ordering out. When I have ordered it I've been disappointed more times than not and I've only made it on a handful of occasions.

This one, RISOTTO ROSSO, sounds just about right and the creator of it, ABRA BENNET, has some other wonderful recipes as well. Maybe it's because I'm on the road right now and missing being in a kitchen or maybe it's that I just looked at the hotel room service menu and was hoping to see risotto on there---either way, this looks and sounds delicious.

color...

You already know my story.

A gallon (or two) of paint can change the way you feel about your room and everything in it. Even if painting isn't your thing and the idea of color on your walls is not something you embrace, finding ways to use color by other means (i.e. accessories, fabrics, surfaces, etc...) can dramatically alter your room and your mood in it.

Homeowner's Veronica & David Webster, along with their charming home, are profiled in an issue of Australian House & Garden. Good Stuff people. Good, colorful, gorgeous stuff that is inspiring.

The Jason Busch Photography of their stylish home is equally beautiful.

pennoyer newman...

Photos do not do the collection available at PENNOYER*NEWMAN justice. Seeing it in person at the Architectural Digest Home Show was definitely more impactful. This is the kind of design that can elevate modest surroundings.

I think I just heard my backyard ask for it by name. Maybe it was Baxter. Either way, it's good times!

This is gorgeous stuff that's been cast from estate originals. It's beautifully made and it will make any backyard, patio or balcony look like a million bucks. They even have a planter on wheels! Come on, you're killing me here. You know my love of wheels. All things should be on wheels--Baxter, I'd hide if I were you.

love my job...

The shorter local news version is here:
MAKEOVER

This story may sound corny to you, but we all already know what a giant geek I am. No cool factor here.

This past weekend I had the extreme pleasure of being able to help Crystal in Coraopolis (Pittsburgh) re-do her living room. She won CSNstores Living Room Search & Rescue and over $6,000 of furnishings including angelo:HOME chairs, sofa and ottomans.

Crystal's mom, Linda, entered her in the contest. Crystal got picked because she's a young homeowner with a fixer upper trying to make everything in her house work for her. She has design dilemmas that are common for most of us. Crystal's fun, bubbly and has a really loving and caring spirit about her. She takes in friends that have nowhere to go. She cares about those close to her and those that aren't but are struggling.

What I didn't know was that the day the 2-day makeover started was the anniversary of the death of Crystal's dad. She was incredibly close to him and he helped her buy the house that she is now living in (her first) when she was 21. She is now 28. Crystal's dad was proud of how responsible his daughter was (and is) --How she was (and is) a hands-on fixer upper. He was a DIYer himself and watching his daughter transform her less than perfect home gave this career military man a sense of joy. Crystal and her brother grew up moving from State to State due to her father's career and having a place to call home and her own is incredibly important to her.

The one year anniversary of her father's passing was a difficult one. Knowing that she had something to look forward to made it a bit easier to tolerate. I don't think there was any coincidence in why Crystal got this makeover---Dad is still looking out for his little girl.

Crystal, it was a my honor and ginormous pleasure to share the weekend with you and your family and friends.

LOVE my job!

ny piers...

I recently had the good fortune to be in NYC for a few meetings and to attend the GOODWEAVE event at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show for DIFFA held at Pier 94, part of the NYC Piers 92/94. If you've never experienced the Piers, they are worth the trip and the events there can be pretty wonderful. This one definitely was.

GOODWEAVE is a fantastic organization. Their program to end child labor along with providing education and opportunities for at-risk children has been implemented by RUGMARK International .

You can find out about purchasing a child-free labor rug, more about the organization and resources if you're an interior designer on their web site:

Good Stuff.

Also, a ton of gorgeous inspiration was to be seen and admired while I was at the show and I will be sharing the visuals and the artists responsible for them with you in days to come.

free...

angelo:HOME (aka "The Daily Tip") is on iTunes and it's free.

Who doesn't love that?

Well, I'm sure some don't but they probably don't like free ice cream either. How could you not love free ice cream? Even paying for ice cream is still a treat because it's ice cream.
There's no way around it, it's just good stuff.

Almost as good as being free on iTunes.

Enjoy.

green...

theo caldwell with lesley

OK, so it seems like everyone I know is not only writing a book, but getting published!

How cool is that?!

All my friends are smart. I'm the goof in the group--every group needs one.
Don't judge people.

Well, here's another friend who has published a book called,

He's (THEO CALDWELL) from Canada and his girl (Lesley) is a very good friend of mine who was my partner in crime when she lived in L.A. in marathon snacking. They live in Canada now so I'm one snaking partner short, but believe me--I've made up for it. Good Times.

Also, not only is this a great story, very appropriate for St. Patty's Day! Get your GREEN ON!

simple cheese souffle...

NOT my recipe, but it looks like a good one!
It's from JENNY in Rancho Park, CA and a contributer to food52

Simple Cheese Souffle

Makes one 7-inch souffle

3 tablespoons Butter
3 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
7 tablespoons gruyere, grated
3 egg yolks
4 egg whites
1. Preheat oven to 400. Butter a 7" souffle dish and then toss finely grated parmesan cheese over the butter.

2. Using a whisk, or an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whip the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Then, in a separate bowl, beat the yolks until they are smooth.

3. Melt the butter over low-heat. Add the flour to melted butter and blend with a whisk. Add the milk and keep stirring the mixture until it is thickened and smooth. Bring to a boil and then remove it from the heat.

4. Once the mixture is off the heat add in the cheese and egg yolks. Then, fold the stiff egg whites into the white sauce and pour the completed mixture into the buttered souffle dish.

5. Bake at 400 for 25-30 minutes, or until the souffle has risen and set (it is no longer watery looking in the center and the edges are slightly browned). Serve immediately and enjoy.
